STATEMENT OF FAITH - GELOOFSVERKLARING

The Testimony that follows has been signed by 44 ministers of churches in Stellenbosch during October 2000 as a broad basis for a common witness by christians in this town on reconciliation, unity and peace.

Testimony

We, the undersigned ministers of churches in Stellenbosch have gathered to affirm anew our common faith and unity in Christ. We come from different church denominations, backgrounds, communities and language groups and witness as follows to the community of Stellenbosch.

1. We have humbled ourselves before God and confessed towards each other the injustice of the past, the estrangement that went with it and the hate and suspicion that followed it and offered one another forgiveness. Under the grace of God we want to start anew with each other and want to help build up a healthy community where every person, irrespective of race, language, gender or background can take their legitimate place.
We call on you to follow us on this road of reconciliation that consists of confession and forgiveness, the acceptance of each other and the joint resolve to contribute to the restoration of our society.

2. We have confessed to each other that we had not done enough to give visible expression to our unity in Christ and that we have succumbed to the temptation to be content with the lack of unity between our churches. We have been content to busy ourselves only with our own churches' concerns in isolation from our fellow believers. We have resolved to work together with each other as ministers in a reciprocal spirit of reconciliation, respect and acceptance. We see our diversity as opportunities to be of service to each other and enrich each other.
We therefore call on all churchmembers to follow us in this by accepting each other in Christ, by seeking co-operation between churches, by respecting each other from within the different church traditions and practices and by utilising opportunities for worshipping together on all levels.

. We are deeply aware of the situation of distress in which many find themselves: unemployment, situations of injustice, crime and violence, fear and conflict in homes and community. We ourselves have resolved to work without cease for peace, justice and stability in our community. We acknowledge the crucial importance of teaching and education. We support initiatives for economic development. We acknowledge the right of the state in maintaining law and order.
We therefore call on all members of the community to seek this peace and justice and to keep on creating hope through word and deed for a healthy society in which values like honesty, fairness, morality, trustworthiness, humanity and justice are decisive.

4. We acknowledge our dependence on God under who's grace alone and by the working of his Spirit the healing of people and society is possible. We have resolved to pray constantly for each other as friends and for each other's congregations. We support prayer initiatives that affirms the unity of the church and which is committed to the common edification of church and society.
We call on believers to pray without ceasing in renewed commitment to God for Stellenbosch and all its people in order that something of the God-intended society of harmony, peace, prosperity and justice may become visible.
Our hope is that other ministers, congregations and believers might identify with the intention of this testimony and that a growing initiative will develop for the building up of our community.

We do this in total dependence on God our Father, Jesus Christ our Saviour through the work of the Holy Spirit.
